Element

Great to see everyone doing so well with their yearlings, just remember to keep asking in different ways, they will answer in their own time, be persistant, and patient, they will come around. Not too much new to say, worked on some reigning and leg pressure. "JUST ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE" Will work on some new things tomorrow, gotta keep posting or Me Mom will get me. LOL robbie_daughtry@yahoo.com

sunday's work

ok i know im a little late blogging, but this is what we accomplished on sunday, i can finally touch fancy without being in the chute:)
i got to pet her forehead, then gradually worked to pet her jaw bone, she didnt enjoy that too much until she realized hey this isint hurting me at all! i guess she can do it. well after i got her jaw bone and forehead pets, without her pulling away i was able to pet her side all the way up to her withers, but she pulled when i went past that, i dont think she likes me being on her side instead of in front of her. we led around some more and i can finally lead walking close to her! then we worked on petting her left jawbone and neck, she wasnt too sure about and moved her head in the way the first few times, but she got the hang of it and it wasnt too bad after all.!

so then we introduced, " the hand" !! ha she jumped away from it for as long as she could and then finally realized its was the same thing i had and let me rub her all over with it! well first my stpedad did it for me because a few minutes earlier something scared her and she took off running leaving me with major rope burn! ouch so mr. robert rubbed her everywhere with the hand! and i mean everywhere and she was for the most part ok with that. then i pet her with the hand and she did real good but i couldnt do a whole lot since the burn was on my right hand, and im right handed, i kinda had to reverse everything and attempt using the left hand, not so easy.

enjoy!

Ergon Giving a Bow

Hello,
I just wanted to ad a few more pics. My Ergon giving a bow to the family audience. Also him just taking a break. Sorry these pics aren't so clear, I took them at dusk.

I have been really loving all the blogs and photos everyone is putting on here. Keep up the good work.

Tuff & Kirstin cont'd

After training, Kirstin decided it was time to get Tuff used to water. As hot as it is here, you would think that this would feel really great. Tuff just wasn't too sure about the wet stuff coming out of the green thing. This is the one & only time that we have seen Tuff disagree with what Kirstin was asking of him. He fought it for a little while, but...

once he figured out that the green thing wasn't a horse eater, and that the wet stuff felt really good, he calmed down and let Kirstin finish.

Kirstin & Tuff-lungeing

Tuff has become a lungeing pro. He has gotten really good with the commands, changes directions really well and Kirstin even has him facing up on whoa. By the end, Tuff was following Kirstin like a puppy dog. He is a really smart yearling and soaks up what Kirstin teaches him. He hasn't forgotten anything yet even though he had somewhat of a break this weekend. Kirstin was kind of busy. She had a playday on Saturday-she posted the colors for the playday, took home 1st place in cloverleaf barrels and 2nd place in straight away barrels and then on Sunday she went to a bridal fair with her older sister who is getting married later this year.

Tuff has even learned to stand until Kirstin calls him in. He is such a sweetie.

This is my Buddy Joe Ride'n his Mustang Can Dot It.
This guy has come a long way in just 17 days.
I can't believe how well he is doing in such a short time.
He is really moving good off of leg pressure he will move his hips around real nice he is a little sticky with his shoulders, not wanting to cross over but I think he will snap out of that, we just have to keep him driving forward and I think he will come around.
Well Rock On Joe keep ride'n that horse because that is what gets them broke.
Rock On,

J-DUB for Joe Gray

What is up Amigos!!!
J-DUB here just rocking like a rock star.
I have been working by two mustizzles and they are doing so good it is unbeliveable.
I have had to give my little Bay pony a few days off. He cut his right front leg on a fence and it got a little swollen so we are focusing on the ground work with him right now.
My big Black brother from another mother is doing good.
I used him to push the little guy around the pen today.
I also got a couple of shots of me taking my Buddy Joes' mustang for a couple loops around the pasture. His name is Can Do It and boy can he do it...... He is really doing great.
Rock On Homies and keep Ride'n Dem Ponies
Peace Out,
J-DUB

Me and Ergon NO Fences

Hello,
I wanted to let you all in on our new adventures. The last couple of days has been extremely hot. So I have to do my training late in the evenings. Today we made a lot of progress. From riding in the round pen to riding in a 3 acre pasture to going on a trail ride adventure 2 miles long.
NO FENCES !! YEE HAA !!
We went through a milo field, up and over canals and a 4-wheeler maze. Oh, what a day !!
He took it really well like a giant sponge. Oh, and some more exciting news. I finally got him to lope.
Better go for now, tomorrow will be here before we know it. All you trainers keep up the good work !! Can't wait to meet ya'all in Fort Worth.

Youth Rodeo on Sunday

We went to Saddle Creek Church Youth Rodeo with our two interns and our youngest son we came home with 3 Buckles and two Halters. The kids cleaned up. The interns are barrowing one of our horses to compete on while their Mustangs are in training. They rode Barrels, Poles, Key Hole and Flag. It was so hot but today right back to work. It was nice and cool we had rain and clouds all day so we didn't start working horses till noon. The girls did the chores this morning and Harold and I slept in till 7am I don't think we have done that since Christmas day.! It was nice.

Thank you to Allen Samuels Autoplex for the donations to the Youth Rodeo.

You others kids that are posting about your Yearlings. Good Job I am enjoying seeing your progress. I bet your folks are so proud. I cant wait till the next one, my interns and son are interested in trying it. My interns each adopted a BLM TIP horse and are enjoying learning right along with them. It is not an easy task as you well know, but so rewarding.

Hi everyone, here are a few pictures of my two mustangs. The little black one is doing really well. He's one of the most easy going horses I've ever worked with. I worked with him for about ten minutes today and was able to teach him to lay down. The big one is still making progress. I jumped up and laid across his back today. In his own personal way, that's a pretty big accomplishment.

SOMETIMES.......

Sometimes you just have to be silly! My girls and I were at the Sonic Drive-In talking about the horses we might get in Paul Valley for EMM 09....and we got to talkin' about Mark Lyons and his mustang Christian and how awesome they were last year and how we really think Mark's moustache is so cool.......and the picture says it all......

Mark....we're not nearly as cool lookin in ours!

take a bow!

june 28, 2009.
tabasco is coming right along!

Element

Went riding today with Brandon and Freckles Today, Element seemed a little jumpy, finally moved up to a lope, first time was kinda collected and smooth, second time He laid his ears back and broke loose, didn't stop till we got to the fence, didn't know if he was gonna run through it or try to jump, but I got his head turned and he stopped and finally settled down. Got passed that step, but needs a lot of round pen work. Keep your eyes open for Brandon in the future, he is really interested in joining EMM as a trainer.

I think he's gonna be great at it. robbie_daughtry@yahoo.com

Zeek and Biscuit

Biscuit was saddled for the first time this evening! He did great. He is such a pleasure to watch. Sorry no pictures I was horseback on one of our colts. So I needed both hands on the reins. But I got done in time to take photos of Zeek being ponied for the first time. Murphy is my husband daughters horse he is such a champ when it comes to working the new colts. He is always in the right spot. He doesn't miss a beat. I have to brag a little here on my step daughter she is a 3rd year Pre Vet college student, I also believe but don't quote me her minor is in the Equine breeding program. She goes to U of A. She is here in Texas with us for the summer doing intern work with our vet Matt at Independence Equine in Gainesville. Shout to Matt Thank you. She is getting a lot of hands on experience. After her long days there she helps with our TIP program. Like I said we are a family ran operation from cleaning stalls to riding the horses. We all pitch in. It was 12 midnight here Sorry for the picture being so dark but using the cool hours to work. As you see I need to get the tractor out and change some lights. I'll get to that when there is more time and more sleep. LOL! I only had a few minutes before getting back to riding my own colts, but as you see Zeek is a just a little weary of Murphy. He was just getting comfy with Harold on the ground. This was a huge step for him. As you can see we are constantly working so the horse trailers new home is inside the arena for trailer loading practice with the MMO's and TIP horses. Off to bed 7 am comes early we have church and a Youth Rodeo tomarrow afternoon. No sleep for the wicked. Thank GOD Church in Texas dose not start until 10am we can get chores done before we leave.

Rainmaker

I have named my horse Rainmaker. Notice the storm brewing in the back ground in a couple of the pictures. He has brought some welcome rain to West Texas! He is doing great. I really like him and plan on using him a lot on the ranch. He'll get lots of miles and drag lots of calves - I'm sure he'll love it! He is a curious and kind horse. My wife and I both think a lot of him.

Horses being therapy

I will tell you all the words of a poet once said it best!

The Outside of a horse is the best therapy for the inside of a human!

As Harold's wife and partner I do Equine Assisted Therapy. You can check it out on my website www.horseswithheart.com/ I have been doing therapy with Youth, Adolescents and Adults for the past 5 years. It is the most amazing thing you have ever seen as some of you have experienced god did make angles with 4 hooves and no wings. I have experienced gods blessings many times. Throughout my life with horses I just never realized how much one horse can change so many lives individually and as families and groups. I have one mare that I brought to Texas with me from the Treatment Center I worked at and she has done some of the experiential over 100 times with different patients or clients each time and she never responds the same way, even though she knows the rules and they don't. I honestly believe god works through them when he feels he needs too. Horses have the closest reactions to a human you can get. Even though they don't speak with words. They see, hear, and react 70 time faster than we do so they know what we are doing before we do. If we listen they will speak, just not in words but actions and body language. This is not a make over horse but this is Bugs one of our TIP Horses that will be leaving us soon to her new family. These horses have boundaries, and trust issues just like us. These guys need us to teach them as they teach us and for us to remember it is not were we want them to be but were they are and were we are and some of us just need a little more time. Others of us horses and humans alike just want to be needed. So their is always a time to expand and time to release. So you that have not gotten as far as others in 12 days do not worry it will come. Just remember to listen and learn what they are trying to tell you. Good Luck to all of you. I love to hear the progress. Zeek and Biscuit are progressing well. We have a trusting and wanna do everything guy (Biscuit) and a I'm not sure if I can trust you totally (ZEEK)but I'm trying so hard. And he really is trying very hard I post pictures of tonight's works later this evening.

Fancy and leading!

hey all you bloggers! it's caitlyn and fancy, well i did it, i can finally lead fancy...after its day 12, but we'll leave out that little detail nobody needs to know:) every horse learns at its own pace right? well she has been haultered with a lead rope dangling on her for a while now i just never could touch it. so last night we hooked a longer lead rope onto the one already on her and let her go to the round pen. well she can somewhat lead now, i can't get very close but i'm not pushing what i've got done so far, we'll save the touching for today! sorry the picture is so dark, the only somewhat cool art of the day is around sunset.. best time to get work done! ha well everyone keep up your good work!

Kirstin & Tuff

So this little guy never ceases to amaze us. He is the most absorbent sponge I have ever seen. Kirstin spends the largest portion of training him in the morning when I'm at work and in the evening she goes over what she did in the morning with him. We then discuss what she will be doing the next day. She just wanted to give this a try, she had never done this before with any horse. So I agreed that she could give it 1 shot but that she couldn't frustrate him by making him do something he wasn't ready to do. Luckily I had my camera ready because Tuff went straight down into a bow. He looks real pretty doing his first bow, doesn't he?

www.kirstinsmustangmakeover.blogspot.com

Robbie, all I can say is WOW! Amazing story I had to explain to everyone around me why I have tears in my eye. I feel very strongly that these horses possess magical powers unseen to many. I have seen it in my daughter, Kirstin and that is why she is involved with the Makeover now. When she was only 12, she didn't seem to have much determination to do anything, she had no interest other than horses. Enter her first mustang, Sakari. At 12, Kirstin gentled this wild horse and taught her basic stuff like leading. But, she gave Kirstin the one thing Kirstin was lacking and that was confidence in herself-that she could do anything if she tried. As you can see, she is now a very outgoing young lady who has a purpose in her life now. She excels in school and is now involved in many different activities. These are truly magnicent animals!

http://www.kirstinsmustangmakeover.blogspot.com/

Element or Angel ?

I read an article at the first of this EMM involvement, about people claiming mustangs being very spiritual and having healing powers. I'm sure ya'll can already tell I think the world of this horse. I have probably started over 200 colts in my 44 years here and never met one like him. After meeting him, I have found so many good qualities in myself I had forgotten, or never knew were even there. Sometimes I really wonder who is training who here. I most definitely believe they do have healing powers. Do Angels come with 4 feet and no wings? By the way this is the first tattoo I have ever got. pic is not that good, but we just got out of a rainstorm. robbie_daughtry@yahoo.com

Here are a couple of pictures of my two mustangs. The little black guy is doing pretty well. We jumped over these barrels today and rode around outside checking out some pretty scary stuff. The big horse is doing better too. I can catch him easily now and he's starting to lead pretty well. I ponied him today to help get his feet moving a little better.

Element Day 12

We are swinging loops now, Element took that pretty well, he is gonna make a tough ranch hand, he is a workaholic. Even with a different headstall that didn't fit right and wouldn't go any smaller in a hurry, and didn't have much time today. Started standing on the saddle when the bottom dropped out, and a much needed rain came in, so we hightailed it to cover. He is a sweetheart, but I may be wicked eneough to melt if I get wet LOL.... robbie_daughtry@yahoo.com

Kirstin, Tuff & Trigger

A couple of pics of Kirstin ponying Tuff. He did alright, but hasn't quite got the hang on following so closely to another horse. It didn't help that Trigs was trying to show Tuff who was boss horse by snapping at him a couple of times-completely uncharacteric for Trigger, he is normally a very laid back horse.

But in the end all turned out well and Tuff gets a little loving from Kirstin.

Hi everybody. My name is Ty Brazeal and I'm in Bosque Farms , NM. I haven't had internet access for a couple of weeks so I'm just now joining the blog. I picked up two mustangs in Pauls Valley on June 12 for the event in Ft Worth. My little black mustang is a making great progress. I was able to ride him on our sixth day back home and this weekend I hauled him to the Hammers and Hooves Horse Fair for three days where we did a colt starting demonstration. He did amazingly well seeing all the other horses and people, but he did try to buck me off once. We're back home now and he's doing really well. Yesterday he learned how to jump big plastic barrels. My big mustang isn't coming along as quickly. It took me three days just to touch him and almost a week to halter him. I have him leading now and can touch him all over so we are making steady progress. Here are a few pictures from the horse fair we went to.

Introducing Samson

Here is a wonderful little horse with no mane-thus his name!! Would have showed him off earlier but my digital is broken-this is picture from cell. Samson has been a delightful journey so far-including our exciting start on his second day home. Your can read about that on his blog. He is so willing to learn-sometimes alittle stubborn-but aren't we all? We have gotten a good start I believe. Groundwork proceeding slowly and steadily, trailered, feet. First mount was on Father's Day. Running into a real heat issue here which is slowing me down alittle - but we will just keep plugging along. Such an extraordinary difference from our 2007 EMM horse- at this stage of the game we couldn't even touch him!!!

Fancy

hey everyone, meet Fancy!
this is Caitlyn, and i finally gave my yearling a nmae, now i've gotta get on the ball and figure out how to let mrs. fancy to let me touch her and get her trust, i've ran her through the chute we have, and pet her but she still can't stand to let me get near her face, i guess cause then she realizes that i'm actually touching her and doesn't want any part of that. i can pet her back and rump... but only in the chute. i've also worked her in the round pen to try and work on join-up, she also doesn't seem to want any part of that either. well hopefully verry soon i will be blogging so happily, that i can touch and lead mrs. fancy!! till then bye keep up the good work yall are doing and can't wait to see you in ft. worth:)

Kirstin & Tuff

Kirstin is training Tuff to be patient with her and to respect her space. In this picture, she drew a large circle around her and Tuff could not cross the line plus he had to keep his eye on her the entire time teaching him patience and that he is to look to Kirstin for instructions. She has only been working on this for 2 days and he already has it mastered. As a matter of fact, he learned to stay and come to Kirstin on cue using this technique.

Here Kirstin is desensitizing him to having a rope thrown all over his body. He wasn't in the least bit concerned about the rope wrapping around his hind feet. He has gotten really good about having his hooves handled.
This was Tuff's first time being led around outside of the round pen. He was a little bit nervous and would lean into Kirstin so she has found something new to work on. Morning time she is only allowed to work in the round pen because her father & I are at work, but evening time she now gets to take him out & walk him around. and she is finding out that what worked really great in the round pen where Tuff was comfortable now needs to be worked on outside the pen where he is a little bit unsure of everything.

Element Day 11

I think this is day 11, not sure gotta send this out to Cody, Ya'll gotta lot of swamps and muddy water in Miss. We were workin on that today, just in case we come see ya"ll THIS HORSE WILL RIDE LIKE THEM DOGS"LL HUNT lOVE YA"LL........ robbie_daughtry@yahoo.com

Old Photo

Ok I think this time the photo will upload I had to change the size on my phone so we can actually see them.
Here is Zeek after Harold first Haltered him.
I changed the size on the camera photo options so Biscuits picture is better. I barrowed a dig camera today still waiting to see if they can fix mine after I dropped it and messed up the zoom. I loved that camera and they dont make them anymore. So I waiting to see if it can be fixed. I am waiting for the bathing photos to be sent to me.

Labels:

Bath Time at the McConnel's

Zeek got his first bath today and enjoyed it. Who wouldnt with 100 degree temp. This week we will be working at night due to the temp. Early mornings are just not enough time. and split shifts are harder than night shifts. He is so black that he looks like polished black glass when he is wet. Hope everyone is staying hydrated and cool. This is gonna be one hot summer.

Can you find Kirstin & Tuff in this picture?

Birds eye view of Kirstin working Tuff. Do you see the little blob between the round pen and the trailer? That's Kirstin & Tuff working on trailer loading. Kirstins' dad had a friend that happened to be flying around on Sunday. We saw the low flying airplane but had no idea who it was or that he was snapping pictures of our place. Pretty cool. You can see just how dry it is right now here is South TX. We have over 100 acres of landscape just like you see in this photo-great for riding a horse in-you stay in the shade, it provides natural obstacles and desensitizing to all different kinds of noises. If any of you are ever in our area(Seguin, TX) and want to bring your Mustang out, you are always more than welcome. Just give us a shout!

FLASH

Meet Flash! I've finally named him.....took a while to see his personality! Picture after working in round pen. Still a little on the wild side, but not too bad!

For some reason Zeeks picture wont upload I'll take another today if I get a chance. They boys are doing great . We are working from 3am to 12 noon around here due to the heat. Everyone gets a rinse off when were done working. Including me yesterday. We are working 6 Mustangs here 4 TIP and 2 MMO plus my babies. I like being able to take a minute actually just a few and really watch my usband work. Zeek and Biscuit are gettig used to use having other horses work in the arena at the same time. They are so expressive in their different personalities.

Element day 7

Hey Bloggers! Great to see everyone doing so well with these amazing horses, and even better you guys and gals are now blogging and letting the world meet ya'll.... Ok I know we decided to rest on the 7th day, but what better place to rest than on a mule sled. LOL I think that is a mule sled, not sure, but it's another obstacle, and looked like a good resting spot anyways. robbie_daughtry@yahoo.com

Waylon & Willie the Mustangs

Well its been 10 days since we brought Waylon and Willie home. They are both doing great! This picture is my Mustang Willie, my husband George's Mustang is Waylon. We have really been having fun with these guys. The ground work is coming along nicely. Hope to be on him soon.

What me and Ergon worked on today

Hello,

We worked on trailer loading today. He was a little hesitant the first try but soon as he went in he was like a pro at it. He loaded and unloaded like he had done it a hundred times. We also worked on desensitizing today. We used what comes naturally down here, a palm tree leaf. He really did well today.

I also rode him today about 30 minutes and also worked on his flexibility, voice commands which he already picked up the word whoa !! He is becoming more and more flexible everyday. He already turns both ways and backs, stops, walks and trots. I ain't brave enough for the lope yet. LOL !!

I hope everyone is having as much fun as I am training and learning new things.

I'll be back in a day or two with more of Ergon's progress.

Biscuit

Hey I figured out how to send photos from my phone to my computer. So I can keep you all updated. At least until I get a new Digital Camera.

Thanks for all the Blog help. I made it through with all your help.

Kirstin & Tuff Trailer loading

One week from the day that Kirstin started working with Tuff. She wants to take Tuff to her Drill Team practice Friday night, but he hadn't been loaded since our trip from Pauls Valley. Our one & only stipulation is that he loads relatively easy, so she decided that it was time to work on trailer loading. This was her first attempt at loading Tuff. He was very curious about the trailer and stepped right on without to much hesitation.

Kirstin then unloaded him and reloaded him 4 different times. Later that evening she did the same thing-loading & unloading him 4 different times. He even backed out for her and she hasn't even taught him to back on cue yet. Tuff is such a sweet horse and he seems to be extremely smart. She has him completely gentled, loves to be touched all over-his favorite spot is his tail bone, he loves to have that scratched. He no longer wears his halter when in his pen, he comes up to Kirstin and stands quietly to be haltered. She also worked on tieing, it didn't take him long before he realized that fighting the rope was pointless.
Looks like Tuff will make his first outing this Friday evening when Kirstin goes to her Drill team practice.

Figured out how to send pic from my cell to my computer

Here are Zeek and Biscuit right after we unloaded them. They are doing great. I hope everyone is haveing a great time with their MMO Horses. Thank you to everyone for helping me with my Bogging Challenge. You all are so nice cant wait to see you guys in Fort Worth.

First Lead

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MztvDJ0e1x0 This is me leading Tabasco today, Happy Father's Day, dad!

SADDLE UP AND RIDE !!

Howdy ya'all,

This is day 8 for me. Ergon is coming along great. It's been so hot here in the Rio Grande Valley,

that after I finished training today, I gave him a nice cool bath. He enjoyed it so well he thought a nice mud bath would just make him more beautiful. What a silly horse !! LOL !!

I can ride Ergon now out of the corral. On the first day out of the round pen he was doing great, I rode him away from the other horses about 300ft and then he decided that was IT after 10 minutes and he wanted to go with the other horses. He started pawing and wantin' to run and not cooperating, he bolted, and I dove off. I'm glad my parents didn't see me !! LOL !!

Today I rode him a good 45 minutes and he really is beginning to understand what I want from him. Today I worked on flexibility, cues, commands, bridling and obstacles. What a great day its been for learning.

I continue to learn his little tricks and what they mean. We are becoming a great team !!

What a great week!

This horse is so much fun to work with! Memphis is moving right along. Challenging, yes, but soooo rewarding. I did create a blog for him at http://www.memphisemm09.blogspot.com/. Here's a little of what we did on Saturday. Today we went on our first ride out and about. What a fun, fun horse.

Ye haww!!

Okay heres the boys under saddle Troubadour and Cowboy Cadillac. Have not been on their backs yet climbed up there but we are taking it slow. Troubadour seems to be coming around now little rough at first with him he was pretty darn wild. Cowboy on the other hand is pretty laid back does not seem to mind much at all once he realizes its not going to eat him. Sorry my internet is being a real big pain were we live at so its been kind of sporadic. Wish I could blog everyday as well, but I will keep everyone posted. Hopefully we are going to start riding here in the next day or so. Troubadour decided to spook at something last week and kicked me in the shin, ended up with 8 stitches WOOHOOOO!!!! Very exciting day, but we were back at it as soon as I got out of the hospital.

We also have started the two kids on feed as well, hay and grain. It seems to be going pretty good had to kinda show them what it was and it was kind of a learning process for them to figure it out. Cowboy he seems to be slower than Troubadour at picking up the feed thing. Troubadour well hes looking forward to chow time everyday and it seems to have made him bond a little more with us. Patience lots and lots of patience!!
Everyone keep up the good work!! Mustangs Rock!!!

Zeek & Biscuit

Hey guess what I figured it out I think we will see if this posts. I am Chancie, Harold McConnels Wife. I will be keeping everyone up to date. The boys are doing great we have 2 MMO. Harold is working with horses about 16 hours a day me too but most of mine are hand raised ones of our own. He has 4 TIP horses and 2 MMO Horses and then trying to get some of our others during his day done. I dropped my good dig camera so until I get another all I got is my phone. Boy its been hot here and our indoor arena is like a sauna. So we are working mostly early mornings and nights. We have two interns this summer they are great help with the chores and are getting alot of experience with our TIP horses. Their parents adopted each of them one. They are working with them only after 3 weeks they are learning alot. Our two boys are also picking up alot of slack around our ranch so we have the extra time for just training. As everyone knows horses are a alot of work and we have 26 here now. Harold named the boys on the way home from Pauls Valley. They are so different from size and shape to personality. Both are very curiouse scardy cats. I want to change Zeeks name to Shall We Dance and call him Dancer. e is so light on his feet I breed and rais emy own colts for this type of athlect ability and this guy will look alot like ours after he gets some groceries in him he has good bone structurehe justhappens to be a follower rather than a leader. Ours are eating well we feen pellets they took to em right away. They are alfalfa.

just an update-

i'm thinking about naming him shalako- "shall-uh-coe"
what do y'all think?
hey y'all! oh my goodness, i can't believe how far everyone is getting! i keep hearing so much about element i already want to meet him! haha. well anywho, my name's kelsey and i'm over here in southwest louisiana and i've got a yearling for this year. i know that for me, today is day number six and i STILL don't have a name for my gelding, i just can't find one that suits him perfectly! he's actually very gentle and i can tell he is curious and wants to cooperate, he just doesn't know how! i've worked with him in the round pen and i've put him in some chutes quite a few times and touched him all over and he hasn't seemed to mind it. he's got a rope and halter on now, and things are moving by smoothly. i'll try to keep on posting, well y'all keep up the fantastic work and keep blogging! see y'all in fort worth :)

kelsey

well gosh everyone, everything you trainers are doing is amazing! good job, keep the good work up! more to come later on my horse, i decided to name her fancy!

Hello everyone!

Wow.. lots of people are riding so quickly! Great for you guys.

I think the BLM feeds Alfalfa hay so that might be the reason you guys can't get them to eat coastal hay. I know with Bue & Cora I had to feed Alfalfa or Orchard grass mix hay at first and then put their grain actually on top of the hay.. they get it after a few days, usually.

I know Cora had really bad teeth problems and wouldn't eat real well until we got her teeth done.
Good luck. I can't wait to pick up my horses(or horses) for the TN event!
Rebecca

Feeding

For those with new mustangs, we have had great success getting ours to eat buy starting with soaked alfalfa pellets and small amounts of feed. Increase the amount of feed in the mix each day. It did take Faith some time to acquire a taste for coastal (she eats every last piece of it now). Using the pellets and a good quality feed, I never saw any weight loss in her.

Congrats on your accomplishments so far. Keep the updates coming.

Element and friends

Some of our riding buddies, that's Mr. Thiess, and Daisy in the middle. Dave on the left, he didn't introduce his horse, I was a little busy at the time dealing with the whole mule thing when they showed up. If you look long enough you will notice I am sitting a little sideways, sorry, but one side was a little sore. LOL

robbie_daughtry@yahoo.com

Element day 6

started with a little trotting in the round pen, a few crooked spins in landscape timber square, then went out for a ride. Guess Element never smelled a mule before, jumped right out from under me twice, but we got it all rolled back in and had a nice ride after all. my rear end and knees have had it today, but I swear I Love this horse. Heck yeah! I can ride a wild mustang, I was riding when I fell off. LOL P.S. no pics of that it is kinda embarassing. LOL

robbie_daughtry@yahoo.com

Hello everyone,
I finally got my blog started. This has been so far a great adventure. From the moment we picked up Ergon at Pauls Valley it's been one wild ride. From the loading shoot to gettin him in the trailer was a cinch. Once we got on 35 south thats when he decided he wanted out at Wild Horse Creek. He was buckin and raring and stomping and turning. We didn't know really what to think about this guy. We drove with him doin this for about 10 miles then we got out and had a little chit chat with him. We let him know it was going to be long ride and he should settle down a little. We gave him a little hay and he realized we weren't gonna eat him and he decided we were all right. We all had a real good understandin. We left Pauls Valley at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and we got home to Weslaco, Tx at 6:30 a.m. Sunday morning. He was stomping and pawing to get out and be with the other horses. We were doubly prepared to let him into the round pen though. We tied the round pen to a tree, we put a extra rope on him . We thought the way he was trying to jump the back gate he was going to be a jumper. As soon as we opened the door he didn't even want to come out. We motioned him out and he took a real slow walk out the door and into the round pen. Surprised us all.
Since then Ergon has been doing real good. First day leading, second day saddling and third day riding. He even lets me pick up all four feet.
I will be writing more later........
See ya all

Green, mine isn't a chow hound either. He has zero interest in coastal (ours is nice too), and still has the same two flakes in his pen as the first day he got here. I've had more luck with alfalfa, but he still takes his time cleaning it up. I also feed Safe And Sound, but he was oblivious to grain at first. He's nibbling it now, but it takes him all day to clean up half - 3/4 scoop. I think it just takes time. I'm not concerned, he's bright eyed, energetic, fat and shiny. I think they will come around. :)

Hi folks. You guys are truly amazing.. riding already. I've been working with mine some, but he's still quite overwhelmed with being confined. I did successfully make it over his whole body on Monday with a stick, which was quite the achievement. Also, he's not eating a whole lot. I'm feeding costal hay and its good quality. My domestic horse inhales it! Is there anything that I could do to encourage him to eat more?

New to the blog

Hi guys! Rita here in San Antonio, TX. I picked up my gelding in Pauls Valley on Saturday. It's awesome to see how well everyone is doing!

My gelding's name is Memphis, he's a 3yo out of Elko Nevada. I've started my own blog, but just started it today, so lots to catch up on. He's not the prettiest one in the bunch, but he's smart, and he's really grown on me. Here he is Saturday night when we got home, Sunday working on first touch and first halter, Monday with his first saddle, and yesterday with me up.

Good luck to everyone, I'm looking forward to all of the updates!

Thanks, Priscilla, I know it's okay, I have lots of patience for him. I just don't want him to be scared! He has NOTHING to fear at my house!! lol Except good treatment! Kirstin, I'm so excited you are doing really well....the girls, Kelsey and Caitlyn are progressing nicely also! They work with their horses in the morning when I'm at work so I don't get to see them. My round pen time is when I get home every day! I need a few months vacation to be an at home mom! (that won't happen!)lol
I check Kirstin's blog daily!!!! Go Kirstin!!

Kirstin & Tuff E Nuff

Robbie, Element sure is looking good. Can't believe that so many trainers are already riding their horses. Everyone is doing an awesome job. Lauren, remember we're on their time. It all seems to come together when the horse is ready for it to, we can't push them to be somewhere where they just aren't ready to be.
Kirstin is progressing nicely with Tuff, but he has become a little to comfortable with everyone. He is starting to use his mouth just a little to much, I know that it is normal yearling behavior to want to put everything in their mouth, but he is trying to put the wrong things in his mouth; hands, elbows, legs, boots if you get my drift. He hasn't bit yet, but...Other than that, the training is going great. Kirstin has him leading, lifting up all four hooves, jumping barrels, stepping up on the little bridge, started some tarp work which was toooo funny especially when nosey little guy thought he would pick up the tarp and try walking away with it. The tarp all of a sudden became a horse eating object and he ran off still holding onto the tarp. Ran half way around the round pen before he figured out that if he dropped the tarp, the tarp quit chasing him.
Keep up the great work everyone and we all love the pictures and updates. Kirstin(with the help of her historian-mom(me/Priscilla) keeps a full running blog at www.kirstinsmustangmakeover.blogspot.com

Hey Robbie! Looking good over there! Yes, I'd love to see your picture of Nevada Star! We all love pictures......and my guy is really not a colt, he's a 3 yr old gelding to be saddle trained! For some reason he has a really big "don't get close to me issue" and he's not curious at ALL! I just want his foundation to be a good one that lessons will stick when taught! Wish me luck! Maybe today???

Element and Me Moms advise

Day 5 -sorry i know I'm not too photogenic today, had another hot day here at work and decided to take it easy, but Me Mom says keep that pony at a trot, so we got there today, a little arguing about taking a bit easy, have had to use very little pressure with Element, but he still may be a little tender, Decided to go outside the Round pen tomorrow for just a slow relaxing ride to take a well needed break, and even God rested on the seventh day, so gonna just chill on Friday. Lauren, that is a beautiful colt. Dave, believe it or not I think I got a pic of Nevada Star at pick up, when he was climbing the chute. will post it if you like but not unless you want me to.

and a shout out to J Dub for some feeding advise. robbie_daughtry@yahoo.com

Just a picture of my guy in the round pen. He's a little nicked here and there, but that should all be gone by Sept.! All I can say is, we're working!

Okay sorry all trainers been out in the sticks with my mustangs, I am moving back to my ranch and apparently our internet decided to go on the fritz. So hopefully it gets better. I am happy to hear that all the trainers are getting a good start on the kids. Mine are doing great, got a chestnut gelding and a dark copper sorrel gelding. I will post pictures when I get them uploaded. We have got saddles on them and are in the process of starting to ride. We are calling the two geldins Troubadour and Cowboy Cadillac. Thank you BLM these are two awesome horses. WOOHOOOO!!!

Nevada Star

My big black gelding is doing real good. We are still on the simple stuff. I think he came a long way from putting his front feet over the 7 foot high loading shute wall and a 15 hour trailer ride. He has calmed down alot quicker than I thought he would and we have bonded nicely. I need to get at his front feet. His heals are real long and he looks uncomfortable. I am able to pick them up but he does't let me have them long enough to get them trimmed. I think he will real soon.

Yeeeee-Hawwwwwwww!!!!!!
Well, This is my buddy Joe working his mustang "Can Do It"
This guy has come a long way since we picked him up on Friday.
He is a real smooth moving horse without a whole lot of up and down.
The plan is to get him out on some trails this weekend so I will let you know how that goes.
J-DUB and Joe Gray

Day 4

I guess the pics speak for itself for day 4. like my son, Brandon says just figured we ought to go a head and bake that cookie. Thanks Brandon we r ridin now. I hear Element is starting to get a pretty big fan club, Thanks to all of you for your support, and kind words of encouragement, still haven't heard from those nice folks from Lawton OK we met at Pick up in Pauls Valley. Gonna try that mental game we were talkin about, drop us a line sometime

"Element"

told Ya he likes gettin a bath lol

Good morning everyone,

just an update from yesterday, day 3, mostly just went over what he has learned, leads well eneough to walk him to a real round pen for a 20 min session on speed and direction. amazing what 20 min can do! I think most of his jitters are gone now, and the fun can begin. we'll keep you posted haven't downloaded pics yet from yesterday, but take my word for it "Element" loves getting a bath, especially in this Texas Heat. robbie_daughtry@yahoo.com

Morning everyone. What amazing stories, J-Dub already on their backs, wow! Robbie Mustangs are incredible horses and the untouched aspect really helps in the training, doesn't it. You don't have to undo anything-you have a clean slate to work with. Element looks a lot like Kirstin's mustang TAZ that we adopted at last year's makeover. He's beautiful. Hey Lauren, Robert & girls. Looks like things are going great for ya'll. You have your hands full this summer. When I watch Kirstin & Tuff, it's hard to believe that she's only had him for a couple of days and that he is a Mustang. So much of what she has experienced in the past hasn't happened-he loves to be touched, Kirstin walks right up to him, brushes him, has him changing directions in the round pen like he's been doing that all of his short life, & has even very briefly picked up one of his hooves. She's almost at a loss for what to do, she always had to start training with desensitizing and gradually working up to what she is doing right now. She is really enjoying Tuff, he has a great personality and is so smart and willing to please.

My Wild and Crazy Mustangs

It has been a long weekend but I finally got these two guys rocking and rolling.
I picked these two home boys up in Pauls Valley on Friday morning, drove them home to Fort Worth and then that is when the proverbial party started. I hope every body is off to a good start with their mustangs.
Keep Rocking the Flipp'n House!!!
Peace Out Homies,
J-DUB

"Element" my new best friend

Oh My God, day 2 - never had the opportunity to work with a mustang without influence from people, I am impressed with his trainability. robbie_daughtry@yahoo.com

I got a filly and she's really curious!Haven't named her yet, but will soon....in our family I have the only girl and the only black one! I had a black filly last year named Sadie Mae and she turned out real good....I brought her home and I can ride her!

first day in the round pen went good. We have a halter on him. His name is Medicine Man, there is a small white "Rx" on his left rump.

first day to work in the round pen.....we want to be friends! seems a little jumpy, but after all, we've moved and it's HOT! able to touch him but he's still nervous. trying to see what his personality is so I can name him! more later...

worked with my yearling today in the round pen! he's smart and fast and can JUMP! but he soon figured out that he would not get over the gate. didn't achieve Join-Up but we're getting there. still don't know what to name him.

Meet Tuff-E-Nuff!!!

Howdy everyone, Kirstin's mom here. Hope all made it home safely. We arrived home around 5:15 yesterday evening, unloaded Tuff and had to get ready to go to my niece's wedding, so Kirstin didn't get a chance to spend anytime with Tuff. But, this morning she goes out there and this is what I arrive to-her & Tuff have already bonded. He loves to be petted and Kirstin has already touched him all over his body-head to tail and even down his legs. She has already brushed him and started his round pen training. Amazing isn't it. She has a really smart little guy and he is very eager to please.

Pick Up from Pauls Valley

I was so excited to meet "Element" for the first time. After the 8 hr.ride home, and a little bonding, I think we are gonna get along just great. he seems to be very giving, cautious, but very giving. Just a shout out to the nice folks we met from Lawton while picking Element up. Thanks for fans like you, I feel blessed to be a part of this. Looking forward to the whole experience. robbie_daughtry@yahoo.com

Cactus K-Extreme Dreaming 2009

Yep, you heard right! Party by the Pool somewhere in OK! I know they would LOVE it! I'm thinking about it too! Yes, they make really BIG swimsuits! lol I'm sure the places to stay aren't too far from one another and we'll keep cell phones handy to "check in" with each other. Did I say, "I can't wait??!!"

Did I hear someone say "Party at the pool!"
Lauren, your girls should bring their suits and jump in, Kirstin would enjoy the company of someone her own age. I know that all of the hotels are in the general vacinity so we should be just down the road(invitation is open). I am really siked about this year, we are no longer the newbies. But for all of the newbies, welcome -this is going to be one of the most exciting times of your life and all of us who have been there will help out in any way possible. Don't be afraid to ask, someone will surely have a suggestion or two.

COUNTDOWN

Go Angie!! I'll bring my laptop Friday and we'll get you really rolling on this blog "thing"! Great to see you on EMM's blog!

Priscilla, we can't wait to see you and your family again! If we get to leave our house around 7am we should be there by 5pm??? I'll bet Kirstin is already packed for the night! lol and the pool sounds like a refreshing idea since it's been so hot.....see everyone soon!

Yeah, just a couple of more days. Kirstin & I leave on Friday and plan to stay there in Pauls Valley. Anyone interested in meeting up and getting to know one another? We hope to be there around 3 or 4:00ish and spend some relaxing time by the pool at the hotel-we're staying at Comfort Inn. I figure this will be our 1 and only vacation so we might as well enjoy ourselves(sad, aren't we). If anyone is interested just give me a call on my cell: 210-913-0158. Kirstin is driving me nuts-Friday can't come soon enough. She is so very excited about this year, I think she feels better prepared.
Until Friday & Saturday! Be Safe!

I am so excited pickup date is almost here. My husband George and I will be off to Pauls Valley to pickup our two new friends. I know the first day will be wild, but after that we will be well on our way for another great 100 days of Great Mustang Adventures!

Good luck to all you other trainers!

Evelyn

Dave,
You are going to have the time of your life. The people you will meet through this endeavor are the most incredible people. If you ever have a question, problem, suggestion-whatever this is your platform, everyone here is so helpful and nice. They all share the same goal and that is bringing out the best in these horses. And I promise you 1 thing-be ready to experience the most amazing bond that you have ever shared with a horse. My 15 yr old is picking up her yearling Saturday morning in Pauls Valley and she owns 2 other Mustangs - she never ceases to amaze us with what she can do with her horses. Best of luck and be sure to keep all of posted.
